Fiverr.com uses SMTP for the messaging?

I am a technical person and always want to learn… I don’t understand how does the messaging and todo system works in fiverr.com and it is lightning fast… just out of curiosity… any one can shed some light… how exactly TODO and inbox works here??? some standard (e.g. SMTP) or custom scripts(php/mysql etc…) ??
